Guide to Myrtle Beach Shore Fishing
Myrtle Beach Surf Fishing from shore offers you to miles of beaches for exciting surf fishing action.
Myrtle Beach Surf Fishing Rigs
The Standard 2 Hook, Fish Finder Rig is the mainstay for surf fishing.
Myrtle Beach Surf Fishing Baits
The most popular surf fishing bait is Sand Fleas or Mole Crabs. These animals live partially buried in the sand and can be dug up as waves breaking along the shore recede. Sand fleas are the best bait for catching pompano.
Other baits include; cut shrimp, squid, bloodworms, and mullet.
Live mud minnows or mullet can be used to catch flounder, spanish mackeral, and bluefish.
Myrtle Beach Surf Fishing Tackle
Use 10-15ft heavy action rod and a spinning reel with a large line capacity. The long rod is needed to cast weights up to 6 oz. while keeping the line high enough above the waves to detect a strike.
Also, use a pvc Sand Spike to secure your rod and reel while fishing.
As of July 1, 2009, individuals recreationally fishing from shore (beach, bank, private dock, public pier, etc.) and those recreationally shrimping and crabbing will be required to have a saltwater recreational fishing license.
For additional information, fees, please visit South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
Myrtle Beach Surf Fishing Locations
The City of Myrtle Beach does not allow surf fishing on beaches that have a lifeguard on duty until after 5pm.
Beaches that do not have a lifeguard from 50th avenue north to 38th avenue north can be fished from shore anytime.
Myrtle Beach Surf Fishing Tips
When surf fishing look for areas of breaking waves which indicates the presence of sandbars.
Also, areas where water color changes indicate currents and runnels which may hold fish.
In most cases, the best fishing occurs from high to low tide.
Do not be afraid to walk the beach and fish multiple locations until fish are found. Fish can be localized in specific areas along the beach, so fishing in one spot all day limits your ability to find and catch more fish.
